Product information "Williamsburg Titanium Oil Ground" Titanium Oil Ground
Oil ground with titanium dioxide and marble dust for the desired toughness and absorbency. Ground made from 100% alkali-refined linseed oil. Contains no zinc or alkyd.
Made from high quality acrylic resin with a good level of pigment strength, it can be used straight from the pot and has excellent “tooth” for film adhesion. To reduce absorbency and to boost the integrity of the film a minimum of two coats is required if working with oils.

The Townsend Dry Ground is a block of pumice tinted with pigments and bound togetherwith a formula I created to adhere to any paper as a support for pastel or any drawingmedium. I have been working with this concept for 45 years. I first made a wet groundapplication based on Cennino Cennini’s “Il libro dell’arte” in which he tells how toprepare a panel for silverpoint by gathering the chicken bones from under the table andplacing them in a fire and collecting the ash and grinding it to a fine powder…tri calciumphosphate…. and mixing it with gelatin. Then apply to a panel and let dry.The prepared surface holds graphite, silver or pastel etc. and intensifies the mark. I usedto make a fine hand painted ground for paper called “pastel deluxe” or “Townsend PastelPaper” that was very successful, but the labor involved made it commercially prohibitive!The surfaces I like and recommend are delicate and allow for subtle uses in a pastelpainting.But priming a paper with a wet ground brings lots of managing in the application and Ithought of a dry ground applied anywhere and the paper could be prepared on the spotwhether in a studio or in the field.The Townsend Dry Ground has been tested for over a year now and works wonderfullywell for those who like the flow of pastel or any medium.Townsend Dry Ground should be applied to paper lying flat on a table or floor. Firstapply a light coat, and then rub it in with your hands. You must wear latex gloves or therewill be nothing left of your hand!Rub this into the paper firmly and reapply a second coat, rubbing firmly! That shouldgive you a smooth even application and just dust off the excess and you are ready to go.
Product information "Vallejo Black Gesso .491 500ml"Primer made of iron oxide and acrylic polymer. Can be mixed with water or acrylic artist's paint. Dirty or oily surfaces should be cleaned before priming. Gesso is durable, flexible, lightfast, non-yellowing and waterproof once dry. Dries quickly and can be painted over with any medium, including oils.
Sludge is a by-product of the acrylic paint manufacturing process. Sludge has the same processing properties as regular acrylic paints and can be used as a paint, primer or painting medium. Recycled pigments are also excellent as gesso! Tri-Art uses recovered pigments from the manufacturing process to produce a high quality gesso.
Product information "QoR Cold Press Ground 237ml" Cold Pressed Ground Dries to a uniquely rough surface and looks like handmade paper with all its beautiful imperfections. Great nooks and crannies to catch the watercolor and allow for interesting lifting effects that you can't get with traditional paper surfaces. Apply with a palette knife by spreading it over a surface (board/panel/paper/canvas). Applied with a dry palette knife, the texture resembles rough handmade paper. Add some water to your palette knife and run it over the wet application to remove some of the roughness and give a surface that is more like cold press paper. 237 ml
ABSORBENT GROUND
GOLDEN Absorbent Ground can be used to create a porous, paper-like surface on many different substrates. It is uniquely formulated for a high level of absorbency when dry. Applied over gessoed canvas, Absorbent Ground allows for wash and staining effects on a stable acrylic film as an alternative to staining raw canvas. Watercolors may also be used, although they will retain their water sensitivity.
PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
GOLDEN Absorbent Ground, designed for stain and watercolor-type applications, is light stable, permanent and flexible. While it has a gesso-like consistency, it is not intended as a gesso alternative. It must be applied over a porous and "toothy" surface, such as GOLDEN Gesso to ensure adequate adhesion due to the type and level of solids in the product. Once properly sealed, it is a permanent acrylic film that does not need to be kept under glass, however, the surface is quite delicate and additional protection is recommended. A properly applied isolation coat and GOLDEN Varnishes (Polymer & MSA) will protect the artwork from environmental factors such as sunlight and dust.

White and Black Gesso are ready-to-use formulations for painting on most surfaces. They are flexible and can be applied in thin layers to conform to a variey to textures without cracking.
